Kandal Province, December 9, 2021 – Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, is honored an official visit to the construction site of the Techo International Airport located in Kandal Steung district, Kandal province, and Takhmao city.

During the inspection, Neak Oknha Pung Kheav Se, Chairman of Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC), the main investor in the project, reported that the new Phnom Penh International Airport is being developed on approximately 2,600 hectares of land spanning Kandal and Takeo provinces.

With a total investment of around USD 1.5 billion, the project is a joint venture between OCIC and a Chinese partner. Classified as a 4F category international airport, it will be capable of accommodating large, long-haul aircraft including the Airbus A380-800 and Boeing 747-8.

Key facilities under construction include a 243,000-square-meter passenger terminal, a 189-hectare aircraft apron, a 118-meter-tall air traffic control tower, energy supply centers, and more than 19 supporting buildings such as VIP passenger halls, a wastewater treatment plant, solid waste management facilities, maintenance centers, fuel storage, cargo warehouses, and a fire station. Infrastructure works also include a 20-kilometer surrounding dike and canal, as well as a new 11-kilometer boulevard linking the airport to Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard with two concrete bridges across Prek Tnaot River.

The project also incorporates environmental rehabilitation efforts, including the restoration of Boeung Cheung Louk Lake, covering 18 hectares with plans for an additional 100 hectares.

Speaking during the visit, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed pride in the progress achieved and officially announced that the new facility will be named “Techo International Airport, Takhmao City.” He emphasized that the name “Techo” reflects not only his title but also pays tribute to Cambodia’s history and achievements under different eras of national leadership.

The Prime Minister stressed the strategic importance of building a large-scale international airport, noting that Cambodia’s growing air travel demand requires facilities that can handle increasing passenger and cargo traffic. He also reaffirmed his intention to mobilize local funding for certain parts of the construction, underscoring the vision of building this airport as a true product of Cambodian effort—“by Khmer hands, Khmer labor, and Khmer resources.”

Samdech Techo Hun Sen extended gratitude to OCIC, Chinese partners, and all Cambodian and foreign workers contributing to the project. He also wished them good health, success, and protection from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following his remarks, the Prime Minister toured key facilities under construction and met with engineers and workers, encouraging them to continue their dedicated efforts toward the successful completion of Techo International Airport.
